Abel + Spyderco Native 5

Two years of research and development ended with the Abel + Spyderco Native 5.

These two popular American manufacturers made a joint effort to target fly fisherman, and created a really unique knife in the process.

The refined Native 5 knife dons a fully machined, aerospace-grade aluminum handle, optimized for grip and comfort. Abel makes the handles in their California shop, polishing and Type II anodizing them to create a fish graphic with a sharp, clean look. The handle comes in three hand-anodized graphics, which fly fishermen are sure to enjoy: native rainbow trout, native brown trout and bonefish.

Spyderco designed a new, 3-inch blade for the knife, which uses a full-flat grind a distal taper and an understated swedge. The Colorado-based company aimed to create a knife with a unique look, but also a geometrically superior cutting edge.

The blade features a very strong alloy called LC200N, which is machined from a nitrogen-based, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. By applying "smart forging" technology and the Pressurized Electric Slag Remelting Process, engineers are able to increase the LC200N steel"s purity and homogenous microstructure.

The steel has a very strong reputation, as NASA even uses it for its high-performance aerospace equipment.

The Native 5 also features a classic, but much-improved back lock mechanism. This, along with the knife"s liner-less style allows for a smooth action and a better self-close function, while also reducing weight (3.26 ounces).

The Abel + Spyderco Native 5 has an MSRP of $495.00.
